[CLOSED] Welcome to Beaumont, Texas! + Aurifil Giveaway

Quilt block and giveaway are at the bottom of this post!

Hi! Welcome to my stop for the Deep in the Heart of Texas Road Trip Quilt Along! This quilt along is organized by Melissa at My Fabric Relish and Cristina at Pretty Little Quilts.

I live in the suburbs of Houston now, but I grew up a couple of hours to the east in Beaumont, TX. Most of my major life events happened there: birth, starting school, college, meeting my husband, marriage and my first graphic design job. While I absolutely love where I live now,  Beaumont will always have a special place in my heart!

The most important day in Beaumont's history was January 10, 1901, when the Lucas Gusher on Spindletop Hill exploded and shot oil hundreds of feet into the air. It became the first major oil field and one of the largest in American history. If you visit the Southeast Texas area, you will see many references to Spindletop and many artistic renderings of oil derricks! When I was in high school, an oil derrick model was a big part of the dance team's football game routine.

Because of its proximity to Louisiana and the jobs created by the oil boom, there is also a major Cajun/Louisiana Creole influence in the area.

Sew What BerninaThe Fabric Store (Nederland), Sew Much More (Nederland) and Sew-N-Sew's  (Port Arthur) are some quilt shops in the area. The Golden Triangle Quilt Guild meets in Beaumont.

The Designer Fabric Boutique recently opened. It is a small fabric store that sells modern fabric. I am sure y'all can imagine my face when I walked into a room filled of Echino, Melody Miller, Heather Ross and Amy Butler fabric! I definitely recommend stopping by if you are ever driving through the area.

  • Gator Country - If you have seen Gator 911, you might be familiar with this place! It is an alligator wildlife park and rescue. Gator Country offers the following activities: alligator feedings, taking pictures with reptiles, holding small reptiles, swimming with gators and more! It is home to "Big Al," the largest alligator in captivity in Texas. I have never been brave enough to visit!
  • The Fire Museum of Texas -  This is the official fire museum of Texas. It is really neat to walk through and see how much technology has changed over time. They also offer safety activities for kids. If you are into roadside attractions, this is the location of 24 foot tall fire hydrant with a unique paint job. It used to be the worlds largest fire hydrant, but it has since been rebranded to the world's largest working fire hydrant. :)
  • Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum - Features a replica of the Lucas Gusher. They do reenactments (with water)!
  • Texas Energy Museum - This is a really nice museum with many interactive exhibits. The focus is definitely mainly on oil. My favorite part is the creepy talking mannequins.
Other Places of Interest:
St. Anthony Cathedral BasilicaThomas Edison Museum | Art Museum of Southeast Texas | Babe Didrikson Zaharias Museum | Clifton Steamboat Museum | Mcfaddin Ward House Museum | Shangri La Botanical Gardens (Orange) |  Beaumont Botanical Gardens | Museum of the Gulf Coast (Port Arthur) | Lamar University | Crockett Street | The Art Studio | Beaumont Farmers Market. I also recommend a trip to Rao's Bakery and Hamburger Depot! :D

  • Beaumont is the twenty-fourth most populous city in the state of Texas and the state's largest city east of Houston.
  • The Port of Beaumont fourth busiest port in the United States It is also the busiest military port in the U.S. and the second busiest military port in the world.
  • Jason's Deli and Conn's were founded in Beaumont. Jason's Deli is still headquartered there and Conn's was headquartered there until recently.
  • People with ties to the area:  Janis Joplin (Port Arthur), Babe Didrikson Zaharias,  George Jones (Vidor), Robert Rauschenberg (Port Arthur), The Big Bopper and Keith Carter. (I was lucky enough to take a photography class from Keith when I was at Lamar. It was awesome!)

The area between Beaumont, Port Arthur and Orange is often referred to as "The Golden Triangle." "Golden" refers to the wealth that the Spindletop oil strike brought to the area and "Triangle" refers to the triangle formed by the three cities on the map.

After clicking the download link, just click the downward facing arrow in the upper left hand corner to download. I recommend downloading the PDF and then printing from Adobe Reader. Print with no scaling. The blocks are 6.5 inches unfinished.

Golden Triangle Block Download
(Block pictured above on the left. I paper-pieced this block, but I included the template document in case you prefer to piece that way.)

And because I went a little overboard:

Golden Triangle Bonus Block - involves Y-Seam (Block pictured above on the right)

EXTRA Bonus Block!

Do not hesitate to email me if you have any problems or suggestions! For information on paper-piecing, Katy at The Littlest Thistle has an awesome series. If you need any help with y-seams, Charise Creates has a short, wonderful tutorial. I definitely needed a refresher course on that skill. I made three blocks before I finally got the bonus block right!

Pay it Forward [CLOSED]

Last year, I was lucky enough to win a "Pay It Forward" giveaway from the very talented Lee at Freshly Pieced. She had one year to send me a handmade gift. In turn I agreed to pay it forward to someone else, within a year of receiving her gift. When I checked my mailbox last week, this gorgeous jumbo floor pillowcase & a generous stack of Carnaby St.scraps was waiting for me! It was such a fun surprise!

Isn't it beautiful? It really brightens up my living room. I can't wait to use the scraps. Thank you Lee!

So of course, now it is my turn to pay it forward!

The rules: I have one year to make the winner a handmade gift. In turn, the winner agrees to pay it forward to someone else. The winner has one year to complete this challenge, starting the day the winner receives a gift from me. It may or may not take me a whole year :D!

If you would like to receive a handmade item from me and you agree to pay it forward, just leave one comment on this post.  If you like, you can tell me your favorite handmade gift to give. I'll use Random Number Generator to choose two winners on Saturday, April 6th at 12pm CST.

International entries welcome. Be sure to leave an email!

Thank you to everyone who entered! I wish I could make something for each of you! The winners of the contest are #5 & #7 which is Jennifer from Knotted Thread and Rachel from Sew Happily Ever After. Congratulations! You'll be getting a little surprise from me sometime in the next year!

Also: Thank you to everyone who linked up to the Let's Get Acquainted Monday Link Up! I enjoyed seeing everyone's projects this week!

Girl Friday Sews Blog Hop + a Giveaway! [CLOSED]

This post is part of the Girl Friday Sews Blog Hop. Giveaway is at the bottom of the post!

My work space! This photo is a big reminder that I need to put an actual photo in my picture frame. :D
Fabric Mutt
I've always had a mild obsession with office supplies. When I was in elementary school, one of the highlights of my year was when the American Girl Magazine "Back-to-School Edition" arrived in the mail. There were so many photos of cute and colorful school supplies. Twenty+ years later, I still cannot ignore the call of colorful paper clips or pretty tape! I always feel a strong impulse to buy a new, pretty pen and planner when I start a new chapter in my life.

While I had plenty of fun office supplies in my possession, my work area was a complete mess. I hardly ever worked in there, because it felt stressful to be in the room. Wires and paper everywhere! Last month, I decided to make my office a happier place to work. The above picture is the result. I love my office now and I enjoy working in there.

One of my favorite additions to my happier office took less than 30 minutes of my time. I made a simple mouse pad, using the tips at More Misadventures. This mouse pad is definitely an upgrade over my previous "generic sunset" mouse pad and it puts me in a good mood every time I look at it. Small things can make a big difference!

Mousepad Front & Back
Given my love of office supplies, it is no surprise that I am very excited to be part of the Girl Friday Sews Blog Hop hosted by the very creative and talented Heidi @ Fabric Mutt! This blog hop is all about making the places where we learn and work beautiful. The talented ladies on the blog hop have planned many great sewing projects to organize and beautify your workspace. I look forward to using their tutorials to add even more of a personal touch to my office and sewing areas. I hope you will join us!

Pink Chalk Fabrics is one of my go-to shops for online fabric shopping.  Things I love about them: 1) Amazingly fast shipping. 2) Gorgeous modern prints (I want it all!).  3) Great selection of Kona Solids and Essex Linen. 4) Good selection of notions, including purse making supplies. 5) Their email newsletter is one of my favorites, because they always share great projects from around the web.

They are also very generous! Pink Chalk Fabrics is offering one lucky winner a $25 Gift Certificate to their store!

[GIVEAWAY CLOSED]

Or you can just say hi! Don't forget to add your email address if you are a No-Reply or Anonymous Commenter(NOTE: Comments using Wordpress & Google+ logins don't always automatically include email addresses)

International entries are welcome. I'll choose a winner via Random.org on Friday, March 22nd at 12pm CST. The winner will be contacted by email.

The winner is comment #43, Gabriela. Congratulations Gabriela and thank you to everyone who entered! You all shared some great tips!

My Answer to the Question- A couple of tips: (1) Command Cord Organization hooks changed my life! You can barely see any wires under my desk(2) One of my big realizations while looking through office inspiration pictures, is that other people don't have less clutter than I do...they are just better at hiding it! Part of my office rejuvenation involved making sure everything had a place. Small or infrequently used objects are in boxes by category (mailing, banking, etc) and frequently used supplies (cameras, wires, etc.) are in fabric baskets. I got rid of my tiny little boxes full of paper clips, staples, etc. and put them all in a wooden box with dividers (Hobby Lobby). It looks better, everything is easier to find and it cleared a little bit of space on my drawer-less desk!

Good luck! Thanks to Heidi for hosting this fun blog hop! I hope you will follow along on the hop and be sure to check back here on April 10th to check out my tutorial!

I'm finishing up a few lap quilts. Thanks for the giveaway!
Thanks for entering this giveaway! I didn't have time to reply to comments (family emergency situation), but I am enjoying reading them! Good luck to everyone on their holiday projects!

Leave one comment telling me about your sewing or crafting plans for this month. Are you doing any special sewing projects for the holidays?

My most pressing projects are the Looking Back Quilt, a Swoon quilt & a Superhero Alphabet Cross Stitch. I was hoping to have the cross stitch done by December 25th, but at the rate I'm going it won't be done for another 10 years. It is taking up all my internet time :D!

SMS Giveaway Winner!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and entered my giveaway for Sew, Mama, Sew Giveaway Day! The response was amazing and I'd like to thank all of you for the great advice & comments! I spent the last couple of days of my wisdom tooth surgery recovery responding to entries, so I'm sorry if anyone received a nonsensical email. I blame the painkillers :D. My sewing machine dreams got a little bigger while reading the comments, so I have a bit more saving to do!

The winner of 1, 2, 3 Sew: Build Your Skills with 33 Simple Sewing Projects by Ellen Luckett Baker & a Grand Finale Jelly Roll is comment #289 which belongs to Angie of Inspired by H and C! Congratulations Angie! I sent you an email to get your contact info!

In other news:
1) In the saga of the angry bird, 3 of the 4 bird eggs hatched! The family has since fled and left the fourth egg behind. My husband thinks they went to a yard where they had more room for activities. :(

2) I still have a lot more cutting left on the Patchwork Prism, but I am loving it so far! I am very impatient and had to start laying it out before all the pieces were cut. Rainbows make me so happy! I definitely need more purple in my stash though. It is my favorite color and what you see is all I could find!

3) Wisdom tooth surgery wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I had all that anxiety for nothing. I look forward to being able to operate heavy machinery and feeling my lips again in the next few days (*crosses fingers*)!

Thanks again to all my bloggy friends! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! I will be spending it on the couch, catching up on all the blog news I missed out on the past week! :D
